The Future 500 China Forum will explore practical steps that enterprises can take, to promote responsible and sustainable practices throughout China. Among the questions we will explore are:

• How do Chinese authorities and enterprises approach the concepts of sustainability, social responsibility, stakeholder engagement, and the “triple bottom line?”

• How can sustainability and social responsibility be embedded within Chinese enterprises, rather than simply superimposed through external audits that are not always successful?

• For global companies operating in China, what is the proper approach to stakeholder engagement, when NGOs are uncommon, and always operate in partnership with government?

• In partnerships between enterprises and government, how can China pursue “smart” paths to growth that leapfrog the most consumptive forms of traditional development?

At the conference, we will provide Chinese enterprises with the opportunity to conduct “360” assessments that will measure and improve their performance against global standards such as Dow Jones Sustainability Index, FTSE4Good, SA 8000, and the Global Reporting Initiative.

We will also roll up our sleeves and consider the organizational goals that Future 500 China should pursue, to help Chinese and global enterprises grow more sustainably.

As China pursues a sustainable path, business must play a leading role. Only when corporate philosophy, culture, and operation follow the principle of sustainable development can companies effectively meet the Chinese government’s development strategy in a creative manner.

“The Fortune 500” are the companies that excelled in the last economy. “The Future 500” are born of new economy, and must be based on a more sustainable foundation. The Future 500 China is an alliance of enterprises that believe in a green economy, and apply practical tools to advance the “triple bottom line” (profits, social betterment, and environmental responsibility).

The Future 500 China Forum ’05 is co-sponsored by The Future 500 (Global), Center for Technology Innovation and Strategy Studies (CTISS) of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China Association of Woman Entrepreneurs, The Future 500 China, and Beijing Academy of Innovation.

This forum will familiarize Chinese enterprises with the "Triple Bottom Line," identify Chinese enterprises committed to meeting global standards, and advance the government’s call for scientific sustainable development. In addition, The Future 500 China Enterprises Alliance will be established, and a training process will also be built to meet the demand from those enterprises.
